  7. ABOVE BOARD PLUS 8 & PLUS 8 I/O INSTALLATION

  9.          INTRODUCTION
  10.          ────────────
  11.   This document contains all the information an experienced user needs to
  12.   install an Above Board Plus 8 and Plus 8 I/O and its software.  If
  13.   you're not an experienced user, you should use the Above Board manual
  14.   for installation instructions or have your dealer install the Above
  15.   Board.

  17.   The Above Board Plus 8 is designed to operate in 8-bit IBM PCs, PC XTs,
  18.   and compatibles, 16-bit IBM PC ATs and compatibles, and 80386- based
  19.   computers with bus speeds of up to 12 MHz.

  21.          THE PC SELECTION CHIP
  22.          ─────────────────────
  23.   For 8-bit systems, you must install the PC selection chip in U95 socket
  24.   located near the large, square chip (see figure).  Don't install the PC
  25.   Selection chip for 16-bit systems.

  37.   If you can't find the PC selection chip, contact Intel's Customer
  38.   Support.

  40.          ADDING MEMORY
  41.          ─────────────
  42.   You must use 1MB-bit chips on the Above Board Plus 8.  You can't use
  43.   256K or 64K-bit chips.  For a list of chips that Intel has verified,
  44.   refer to the Above Board manual or to FaxBack Document #1014, "Classic
  45.   Above Board Memory Chip Compatibility."

  47.   You must fill two columns at a time.  Add the chips to the Above Board
  48.   in the order shown in this figure:

  58.          ADDING PIGGYBACK MEMORY OPTION BOARDS

  60.   You can use the 6M-byte Piggyback Memory Option board to add memory to
  61.   your Above Board Plus 8.  The 2MB Piggyback board is not compatible.
  62.   For a list of chips that Intel has verified, refer to the Above Board
  63.   manual or to FaxBack Document #1014, "Classic Above Board Memory Chip
  64.   Compatibility."

  66.          RUNNING SETBOARD
  67.          ────────────────
  68.   The SETBOARD program lets you configure the Above Board Plus 8.
  69.  
  70.   To run SETBOARD, insert the Above Board diskette into drive A, type
  71.   A:SETBOARD, then hit the ENTER key.  Any time you need help answering a
  72.   question displayed on the screen, press the F1 key for help.

  74.          AUTOMATIC SETUP
  75.   Use this option when you want the Above Board Plus 8 to fill
  76.   conventional memory (in systems with less than 640K) and use the rest of
  77.   its memory as expanded memory.

  79.          MANUAL SETUP
  80.   Use this option if you need to do any of the following:
  81.  
  82.   ■    Use Above Board memory as extended memory (16-bit systems only)
  83.   ■    Set Expanded Memory I/O Port to other than 258h
  84.   ■    Set the Serial or Parallel port address (Above Board Plus 8 I/O
  85.        only)
  86.   ■    Set Computer's Bus Speed faster than 6 to 8MHz (16-bit systems
  87.        only)
  88.   ■    Set Memory Chip Speed to other than 150ns

  90.          SETTING SYSTEM BOARD SWITCHES FOR AN IBM PC
  91.   If you have an IBM PC and use the Above Board Plus 8 to provide
  92.   conventional memory, you need to set switches on the computer's system
  93.   board.  If you don't add conventional memory with the Above Board, you
  94.   don't have to change the computer's switches.
  95.  
  96.   The following figures show the settings for IBM PC-1s and PC-2s if the
  97.   Above Board provides conventional memory up to 640K bytes:

  108.   NOTE:   PC-2s have a "B" stamped on their back panel, PC-1s don't.

  110.          RUNNING THE SETUP PROGRAM
  111.          ─────────────────────────
  112.   Most 16-bit computers don't use switches to set system options.
  113.   Instead, you run a "SETUP" program which saves the system configuration
  114.   in CMOS RAM.  Check your computer's User's Guide for instructions on how
  115.   to run the SETUP program for your computer.

  117.          INSTALLING SOFTWARE
  118.          ───────────────────
  119.   Installing the Above Board software involves these steps:
  120.  
  121.              ■   Copying files
  122.              ■   Setting up expanded memory
  123.              ■   Setting up RAM disks
  124.              ■   Setting up a print buffer
  125.  
  126.          COPYING FILES
  127.   Copy the files you need from the Intel diskette to your hard disk's root
  128.   directory or to your system diskette.

  130.          SETTING UP EXPANDED MEMORY
  131.   To use expanded memory, add this line to your CONFIG.SYS file:

  185.          SETTING UP RAM DISKS
  186.   To use a RAM disk, add this line to your CONFIG.SYS file:

  190.   Where "x" specifies the size of the RAM disk in K bytes.   The value for
  191.   "x" must be at least 16 and can't exceed the total amount of expanded
  192.   memory in the computer.  Values that aren't multiples of 16 are treated
  193.   as the next higher multiple of 16.  You don't need to type a "K" after
  194.   the number.

  196.          SETTING UP A PRINT BUFFER
  197.   To use a print buffer, add this line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

  231.          IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS

  233.   If you receive error messages during installation that say, "One or more
  234.   of the parameters are missing or invalid...", you probably have an early
  235.   version of the Above Board software.  You can get the latest software by
  236.   contacting Intel's Customer Support or by using your modem to download
  237.   the software from the Intel BBS.
